Origin: Akawa Project - Runyinya
The Runyinya mill is one of 13 mills that form the Akawa project. A joint venture between SUCCAM and Supremo, the Akawa project was created to help producers escape the cycle of poverty in a sustainable and equitable way. Producers, striving for fairer remunerations and better living conditions, demanded a path towards prosperity. As such the project's working directives are based around UTZ certification standards, focusing on good agricultural practices, environmental responsibility and social equity as the central tenets of success for project members.
Of all the mills that come under the Akawa Project umbrella, Runyinya has a special place in our hearts. We have been sponsoring this mill since 2017, with over $20KUSD donated for investment in new seedlings, drying beds and a drying tunnel. Under the stewardship of Patrick Dusabe and Bernard Kubwimana, we have seen tangible improvements in quality over this time, allowing producers to demand a higher price for their coffees. Their desire for constant innovation has lead to their creation of honey lots for 2019, as well as their usual washed offers
