Description:
Grown by smallholder farmers across the misty slopes of Jiwaka Province, this naturally processed coffee captures the spirit of Papua New Guinea’s highlands. The region’s rich volcanic soil and elevated terrain – reaching up to 1,770 meters – nurture heirloom Arabica varieties like Arusha, Bourbon, and Typica, all descendants of early Jamaican and Tanzanian stock. These classic cultivars thrive in Jiwaka’s cool, humid climate, producing dense, high-quality beans.
Each farm is a small family operation, where coffee trees grow alongside food crops such as bananas, yams, and sweet potatoes beneath native shade trees. This intercropped agroforestry system enriches the soil and maintains biodiversity while keeping farming sustainable for future generations. Harvesting and processing are community efforts – villages often share drying beds and work together to maintain consistency and quality.
The natural process allows the cherries to ferment slowly in the fruit, concentrating the sweetness and depth that define this coffee’s profile. Expect a rich, full-bodied cup with dark chocolate undertones and a soft fruit character that reflects the care and craft of Jiwaka’s farmers.
